BEHIND THE STORIES

From reading circles
to student authors.

During their first year learning English as a foreign language, teenage students at Drujba High School read simplified stories and discussed them in literature circles. They then wrote their own stories for this 2014 collection.

The reading circles connect this book to Osman Bedel’s earlier MA research on literature circles in EFL. The research explored interaction and collaborative learning through shared reading; Let’s Write shows a later classroom project in which students’ writing reached readers through a book. The collection is a publishing project, not a second research study.

Bedel, the students’ English teacher and the book’s editor, wrote that he kept his changes largely to spelling and punctuation so their individual voices remained. The stories on this site are shown as images of the original book pages.
